During my time at BU, I would often judge the coming of winter not by the falling leaves or the dropping temperatures, but by the COM fountain. If it was below a certain temperature and it was past a certain date, that fountain was off. I never really knew when it would happen, but once I noticed it, I knew that the inevitable had finally come: winter was here. It's always a sight for sore eyes when you finally realize, on that first warm spring day, that the fountain is on again.
